Anxiety

Anxiety is a stress response that often manifests itself in the body. Common symptoms include racing thoughts, and excessive worry, but it is frequently accompanied by physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, shallow breathing, feelings of "nervous energy." There are many effective approaches to reducing anxiety. Counselors at Forge Wellness use the most current and advanced therapies to treat anxiety disorders. These treatments include experiential techniques, Somatic Experiencing, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness training, and relaxation therapy.

Depression

Depression is a very common mood disorder that can affect motivation, diet and sleep patterns, and beliefs about self-worth. There are many treatments available to address depressive symptoms and causes. Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), has been shown to help people change beliefs about themselves that perpetuate depression. EMDR may also be helpful to address causes of depression.

Trauma/PTSD

"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." -Peter A. Levine

In my experience, trauma may be the most frequently misunderstood human experience. It is true that abuse, violence, and major events can cause trauma. But trauma occurs whenever there is some unprocessed or under-processed emotion or memory. Untreated trauma has also been linked to physical health problems (e.g. stomach ulcers, hypertension, autoimmune disorders). EMDR and experiential techniques have been shown to heal individuals with trauma related stress.

Addiction

Addiction is a chronic brain disease that is characterized by compulsive comfort seeking. The word addiction is often used to refer to Substance Use Disorder. However, process addictions such as workaholism, sex and love addiction, gambling, shopping and food addictions are other ways people may seek comfort yet find themselves with more stress. With any addictive disorder, the goal is behavioral change. Yet, underlying needs will need to be addressed.
